Egypt was once home to one or more gargoyle clans in antiquity, though little concrete information about them survives. Given the prominence of monumental stone architecture along the Nile, it is widely assumed that Egyptian gargoyles lived openly among humans and served as guardians of temples, cities, and sacred sites.

The clan or clans likely predated many of Egypt’s dynasties and may have been associated with religious or mythological traditions, though the exact nature of their relationship with humans and priesthoods is unknown. Unlike some cultures where gargoyles were hidden or persecuted early, ancient Egypt’s reverence for stone, guardianship, and hybrid beings suggests a period of relative coexistence.

At some point, possibly due to changing religious beliefs, political collapse, or human hostility, the Egyptian gargoyles disappeared. Whether they were destroyed, forced into hiding, or fled the region entirely is unclear. No confirmed modern descendants or successor clans are known.
