Demona's Clan

After the Wyvern Massacre, Demona wandered Scotland alone, surviving by raiding human farms and storehouses. Over time, she gathered rogue gargoyles and remnants of Wyvern splinter groups into a new clan, swiftly asserting herself as leader. Though she appointed a second-in-command, she kept real authority tightly controlled.

By 997, Demona had divided her clan into scattered cells across Scotland to prevent another mass slaughter. This caution proved wise when Constantine, aided by Gillecomgain, later the first Hunter, began a campaign of gargoyle genocide, destroying the Sruighlea Cell. Soon after, Brooklyn sought the clan’s aid during his TimeDancing. Demona reunited her cells for the Battle of Rathveramoen, intending to seize control of Scotland once Constantine was defeated. The clan’s fate immediately afterward remains unknown.

By 1020, the clan was still small and focused solely on survival. Demona’s main group, the Lunfanan Cell, numbered six gargoyles and had lost all known gargoyle beasts. They survived through raids on humans, a tactic that troubled some members. In 1040, Duncan and Macbeth discovered the clan sleeping in stone. Though Macbeth initially persuaded Duncan to spare them, Duncan later returned and killed at least one gargoyle before the others escaped.

Macbeth soon forged an alliance with Demona, marking a rare truce between humans and gargoyles. Her clan played a decisive role in defeating Duncan, and after Macbeth’s coronation, Demona served as his chief advisor. For nearly seventeen years, her clan lived near Castle Moray, slowly growing to around two dozen members by 1057, still divided into cells for protection.

That year, Malcolm Canmore invaded Scotland. Though Demona’s clan initially resisted, her paranoia led her to betray Macbeth by striking a deal with Canmore. Canmore, in turn, betrayed Demona and exterminated her entire clan, leaving her once again the sole survivor. How the scattered cells were destroyed so quickly remains unclear.

No rookery was ever confirmed, though eggs may have existed and were likely destroyed. Though Demona later claimed the Hunter wiped out Scotland’s last gargoyle clan, this was not strictly true, the Loch Ness Clan survived, but her words likely referred to her own. The alliance between Demona and Macbeth represents one of the final human–gargoyle partnerships in Scotland, and possibly Europe, marking not a golden age, but its tragic end.
