The London Clan is among the oldest gargoyle clans still in existence, likely predating the city of London itself. Much of its early history is unknown, though the clan appears to have encountered King Arthur centuries ago. After Arthur’s apparent death, the Three taught the clan the Excalibur Poem, which has since been passed down to every new generation of hatchlings.
As London expanded, the clan relocated to a rural estate known as Knight’s Spur, while maintaining a magic shop, Into the Mystic, in Soho. As public attitudes toward gargoyles worsened, the clan became increasingly secretive, disguising themselves while working in the shop. By the early 11th century, most believed gargoyles had been eradicated from England, though the London Clan endured in secrecy. During this time, they amassed a vast library at Knight’s Spur containing extensive knowledge of gargoyle history.
By the 20th century, the London Clan had grown quite large. To limit its population, the clan adopted strict breeding controls, allowing mated pairs only two eggs and separating genders during third heats. While this kept the clan stable and prosperous, it also marked a departure from the traditional Gargoyle Way, as the clan largely ceased protecting the wider community.
An exception was Griff, who chose to defend London during the Battle of Britain in 1940. A time-traveling Goliath joined him in combat against the Luftwaffe. Believed killed, both were memorialized by the clan, though in truth Griff was taken to 1996. Upon his eventual return, Griff inspired the London Clan to once again protect their neighborhood openly, becoming a “worst-kept secret” tolerated by locals because of the good they did.
Later, members of the clan aided in the relocation of the Stone of Destiny, working alongside King Arthur and several Manhattan Clan gargoyles. Afterward, the group resided at Knight’s Spur for several months before returning to their respective paths.
By 2198, the London Clan had become founding members of the Gargoyle Nation. Their Soho shop had expanded into a major commercial center, and the clan had adapted well to human society as merchants. That same year, their leader and rookery eggs were taken to Queen Florence Island for the formation of a new clan, but were kidnapped by the Space-Spawn and placed in stasis.
