The Mayan Clan has lived at Chac Ix Chel since at least the 10th century, likely long before humans arrived in the region. They formed an alliance with the local Maya, and in 990 a human wizard created the Mayan Sun Amulet and its four pendants to ensure the Pyramid was protected both day and night. Whoever whore one of the pendants would not turn to stone during the day.

Centuries later, the clan witnessed the arrival of European colonists, an event that proved catastrophic for both the native people and the gargoyles. While most of the Maya eventually disappeared or abandoned the Pyramid, the clan endured, guarding both the Pyramid and the surrounding rainforest they call “The Green.”

Tragedy struck in 1993 when poachers discovered the Pyramid while the clan slept in stone. With all four pendant bearers absent, the poachers destroyed nearly the entire clan and stole the Sun Amulet. Only four gargoyles survived, though the rookery, containing 20-40 eggs, including gargoyle beasts, was left intact, allowing the clan hope for renewal when the eggs hatched in 1998. In response, the survivors vowed that at least two gargoyles would always remain awake to protect the Pyramid and the forest.

In 1996, Cyberbiotics began clearing nearby rainforest, bringing the company into direct conflict with the clan. The gargoyles resisted non-lethally, frightening intruders away. When mercenaries Jackal and Hyena were hired to eliminate them, the Mayan Clan was aided by Goliath, Elisa, Angela, and Bronx during the Avalon World Tour. With their help, the mercenaries were defeated and Cyberbiotics abandoned the project. Some endangered plants were saved and relocated to Avalon.

Over time, the clan slowly recovered, remaining fiercely dedicated to protecting The Green. Although the effects of the Gargoyle Minority Protection Act in Guatemala remain unclear, the Mayan Clan was still safeguarding the forest as late as 2198. That same year, the clan, one of the twelve forming the Gargoyle Nation, would face new danger when their leader and rookery were kidnapped by the Space-Spawn from Queen Florence Island.
