When the ancient Olympians founded New Olympus, gargoyles from the Olympian Clan and several nearby clans, now extinct, were invited to join them. Those who accepted became the New Olympian Clan, largely motivated by the same goal as the Olympians themselves: escape from human persecution. As a result, the clan appears to share the island’s prevailing distrust, apathy, or ignorance toward humanity.
Although considered citizens of New Olympus, the New Olympian Clan remains a self-governing and highly insular group, even by local standards. They keep almost entirely to themselves and rarely interact with broader New Olympian society. This isolation was evident during the Avalon World Tour, when the clan neither revealed itself to Goliath and his companions nor made its existence known to them. Their withdrawal does not appear to stem from hostility, as New Olympians such as Taurus have spoken respectfully of gargoyles. Series creator Greg Weisman has suggested the clan’s leader may simply have been unwilling or unprepared to engage under those circumstances.
After New Olympus began tentative contact with the outside world following Terry Chung’s encounter, the existence of the New Olympian Clan remained undisclosed, in part because most of the clan opposed opening relations with humanity. Despite this, the clan was publicly known by 2188 and became a founding member of the Gargoyle Nation, maintaining a tense but peaceful relationship with the wider world.
In 2198, the clan suffered a major blow when its leader and rookery were kidnapped during the Space-Spawn attack on Queen Florence Island.
