The origins of the gargoyles who became the Wyvern Clan are unknown. At some point, the dragon Wyvern brought them to his hill to serve as protectors of his land and treasure. The gargoyles established a clan on Wyvern Hill, using a large cavern as their rookery and sleeping among the cliffs or older ruins above it. At this time, they built no permanent structures and lived by hunting and gathering in the nearby forest. Due to their isolation, they had little contact with other clans or with humans.

In the mid-900s, the Scottish soldier Robbie encountered the clan and befriended its Rhydderch, later known as Hudson. In 971, Robbie introduced the clan to Prince Malcolm, securing an alliance that led to the enthronement of Malcolm’s brother Kenneth as King of Scotland and the construction of Castle Wyvern atop the ruins above the rookery. Though the dragon Wyvern opposed the castle’s construction, the alliance between humans and gargoyles held, and the dragon eventually withdrew.

For roughly two decades, humans defended the clan by day while the gargoyles guarded the castle by night. The clan grew so large that between 988 and 994, a group departed to form a new clan elsewhere. After Prince Malcolm’s death, his daughter Princess Katharine assumed control of the castle and grew fearful of the gargoyles. Human hostility increased, and the alliance steadily deteriorated.

In 994, during a Viking attack led by Hakon, the gargoyles were betrayed. Most of the clan was destroyed in what became known as the Wyvern Massacre. Goliath and Hudson survived because they were away, Demona fled before the attack, and several young gargoyles and the clan’s eggs were hidden in the rookery.

The survivors later rescued the humans, but that night were placed under a magical sleep by the Magus. Demona went on to live as a rogue gargoyle and later formed her own clan. Goliath entrusted the remaining eggs to Princess Katharine, who carried them to Edinburgh. With this, the Wyvern Clan came to an end.
