Puck's Flute

Capable of bending an individual's will.

Puck’s Flute was a powerful magical instrument crafted by Puck, one of the Children of Oberon. Visually, it resembled a simple cylindrical tube with finger holes carved along one side. Its material composition and exact method of play were never revealed. Despite its unassuming appearance, the flute possessed immense magical potential, much of which remained undefined for centuries.

In 971 AD, the flute rested within the hoard of the dragon Wyvern. When Wyvern attacked Wyvern Hill, the Archmage seized the opportunity and sent his apprentice Demona to retrieve the artifact from the temporarily unguarded hoard. Using a Scrying Glass, Demona located the flute among the treasure and delivered it to her master.

At an unknown point during the Middle Ages, Puck reclaimed the flute and employed it while assuming the legendary identity of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.

By 1996, the flute was in the possession of Oberon, who used it to aid the gargoyle beast Boudicca in tracking Puck’s scent after he failed to attend the Gathering. Oberon ultimately located Puck in New York City and began banishing him from Avalon and stripping him of his powers. Sensing the flute’s presence, Puck mystically stole it from Oberon at the last moment.

For approximately the next year and a half, Puck, disguised as Owen Burnett, used the flute to entertain the infant Alexander Fox Xanatos. In July 1997, Demona identified the flute as one of the newly reemerged Three Keys to Power and confronted Puck to seize it.

After also obtaining Cleopatra’s Necklace, Demona used Puck’s Flute within her townhouse, commanding its magic to act as her proxy. Through its power, she enchanted the human population of Manhattan and Brooklyn, compelling them to serve her will. Her domination ended during a confrontation at LaGuardia Airport, where Goliath seized the flute and began weakening her control over the Three Keys by reminding her of her lost humanity.

Goliath was soon joined by Demonaa and Turquesa, and together they separated Demona from the Keys. Under the guidance of Coldfire, the Keys were used to free the enthralled humans. Once the spell was broken, Goliath snapped the flute in two. Later that night, he returned the shattered remains to Owen, who accepted them with a knowing smile.
