Andrew Martin is introduced as an NDR-114 household robot designed to serve the Martin family, but over time he develops curiosity, creativity, and genuine emotions. As decades pass and generations of humans age and die, Andrew evolves, upgrading his body, learning art and craftsmanship, and forming meaningful relationships that blur the line between machine and man. His greatest desire becomes recognition not as property, but as a person. Andrew ultimately chooses mortality, sacrificing his immortality so that humanity will legally and morally accept him as human, proving that the capacity to love, choose, and grow defines life more than the materials from which one is made.
