History:
- Introduced in 2233, they replaced the earlier assignment patches
- Sometime before 2256, Starfleet adopted assignment patch-style variations of these badges
- Some officers still wore metal badges
- By the 2280s, this styling had ceased, & Starfleet once again adopted metal badges
- By 2340, Badges had been replaced by combadges
