- They believed the outpost was being used as a staging ground for a Federation assault, but no such military base existed
- The attack struck the civilian population and caused close to one hundred casualties
- The USS Rutledge, commanded by Captain Benjamin Maxwell, was the first Federation starship to arrive
- Miles O'Brien saved the lives of thirteen men by using a field transporter for the first time
- O'Brien also led two dozen Starfleet personnel against the Cardassian Barrica encampment
- Maxwell's family was among those killed
