  • Device capable of moving an object from one location to another
  • Initiated by the request to "energize", began with a lock to coordinates;
  • The destination was verified & programmed, via the targeting scanners
  • The users was dematerialized, broken down into a stream of subatomic particles
  • This stream, called the matter stream, was briefly stored in a pattern buffer;
  • Biofilters were used for decontamination if needed, could also deactivate weapons
  • User was reassembled or rematerialized at their destination
  • The whole transporter process was called beaming

  • 29th Century: Temporal transporters allowed people to travel through time
  • 32nd Century: Starfleet incorporated personal transporters into Tricom badges
