Device capable of moving an object from one location to another
Initiated by the request to "energize", began with a lock to coordinates;
The destination was verified & programmed, via the targeting scanners
The users was dematerialized, broken down into a stream of subatomic particles
This stream, called the matter stream, was briefly stored in a pattern buffer;
Biofilters were used for decontamination if needed, could also deactivate weapons
User was reassembled or rematerialized at their destination
The whole transporter process was called beaming

32nd Century: Starfleet incorporated personal transporters into Tricom badges
