Aud was born in Sjornjost, Sweden in 860. After cursing her unfaithful lover, she was approached by the demon D'Hoffryn and turned into a vengeance demon named Anyanka. Anyanka spent a millennium granting dark wishes to scorned women.

In 1998, Anyanka lost her powers and became human. She took the name Anya Jenkins and over time fell in love with Xander Harris. When Xander left her at the altar, a grief-stricken Anya became a vengeance demon again. This only lasted a few months as she could no longer stomach the violence and death; she got D’hoffryn to turn her human again. In 2003, Anya was killed in the battle with the first Evil.
