Galactic Civil War

Date: 0 BBY - 5 ABY

A struggle for control of the galaxy, fought between the Alliance to Restore the Republic and the Galactic Empire. Its roots lay in the Clone Wars, when resistance cells originally armed by the Republic and the Jedi Order survived the rise of the Empire. After Supreme Chancellor Palpatine revealed himself as the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, destroyed the Jedi, and transformed the Republic into an authoritarian regime, these scattered cells turned their efforts against Imperial rule and eventually united as the Rebel Alliance.

The Alliance achieved its first decisive victory by stealing the Death Star plans at Scarif, enabling the destruction of the battle station at Yavin by Luke Skywalker with critical assistance from Han Solo. The Empire responded with an aggressive campaign led by Darth Vader, driving the Alliance from its base on Hoth and scattering its fleet. Despite this setback, the Rebels survived and regrouped, continuing to strike Imperial targets across the galaxy.

The war reached its climax at Endor, where the Alliance assaulted a second Death Star, unaware it was bait for a massive Imperial ambush. During the battle, Skywalker confronted Vader and the Emperor. In an act of redemption, Vader destroyed Sidious at the cost of his own life, ending Sith rule. The Rebel fleet destroyed the second Death Star, shattering Imperial command and leaving the Empire fractured.

Although major fighting continued, the Empire made its final stand one year later at Jakku, where New Republic forces defeated the remaining Imperial fleet. Soon after, Grand Vizier Mas Amedda formally surrendered, signing the Galactic Concordance on Chandrila. The treaty ended the war, dismantled the Empire’s military power, and marked the fall of Imperial rule and the beginning of a fragile new galactic order.
