Remy LeBeau, better known as the thief Gambit, is a mutant with the ability to charge inanimate objects and cause them to explode. Abandoned at birth due to his burning red eyes, and black Sclera, he was raised by the Thieves Guild. Gambit's dark path led him to become a secret agent for Mister Sinister. After befriending fellow mutant thief, Storm, he was invited to the X-Men, and had the opportunity to redeem himself.

Although he morally conflicted with much of the X-Men's way of acting, Gambit's soft spot for abandoned kids caused him to integrate well into the team while getting close to many of its members, especially Rogue whom he developed a romance with. Although a longtime member of the X-Men, upon the public reveal of his association with Sinister, the X-Men rejected his membership, though he eventually made it back to the team.

Shortly after getting married to Rogue, Gambit joined most of mutantkind on the mutant nation of Krakoa. Gambit then joined the diplomatic team Excalibur to keep an eye on Apocalypse.

He employed playing cards he charged with kinetic energy as his trademark weapon.
