Geordi La Forge was born in Mogadishu, Somalia to Silva and Edward La Forge, in 2335. Geordi was born blind but received his first VISOR which allows him to "see" much of the electromagnetic spectrum, when he was five. He graduated Starfleet Academy in 2357.

In 2364, Lieutenant JG La Forge was assigned to the USS Enterprise-D under Captain Jean-Luc Picard, as Conn Officer. In 2365, he was promoted to Lieutenant and became the chief engineer. The next year, Georgi was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. After the destruction of the Enterprise-D in 2371, he transferred to the Enterprise-E. Around the same time, Geordi received ocular implants that gave him more visual range than his VISOR.

By 2385, LaForge, was promoted to Commander and assigned to the Utopia Planitia Ship Yard. Geordi later rose to the rank of Commodore and had two daughters, Alandra and Sidney, both of whom joined Starfleet.

By the early 25th century, La Forge was the head of the Fleet Museum on Athan Prime. During Frontier Day, La Forge revealed that he had spent the last twenty years rebuilding the USS Enterprise-D, intending to reveal her as a surprise one day. Although not fully rebuilt, the ship was functional enough to be pressed back into service against the Borg by her old command crew.
