- Fired a nadion particle beam as a focused energy discharge
- Used primarily in defensive situation, also used as a cutting tool or energy source
- Capable of being set to overload, resulting in a forced chamber explosion
- Had multiple settings, ranging from stun, kill to disintegration
- Could be set for a narrow or "wide" beam, frequency could be adjusted
- Starfleet had 3 main type of phasers, from side arms to rifles
- Smallest, most basic weapon carried by Starfleet
- Carried when it would be inappropriate to carry a larger weapon
- Larger weapon, typically carried on away teams
- More powerful rifle variant, operated with two hands & could recharge
