Red Wedding

After the execution of Rickard Karstark, Robb Stark lost nearly half of his army at Riverrun. Desperate to restore his strength, he sought reconciliation with Walder Frey, whose support he had forfeited by breaking his marriage pact. As recompense, Walder demanded that Edmure Tully wed a Frey daughter. Edmure agreed, and the wedding was held at the Twins, attended by lords of the North and Riverlands.
During the feast, Walder Frey mocked his own failure as host to provide Robb with a wedding gift. Roose Bolton realized they had been lured into a trap and warned Catelyn Stark, but it was already too late. At Walder’s signal, the musicians revealed crossbows and opened fire. Talisa Stark was stabbed repeatedly, killing her and her unborn child, as Robb and his bannermen were slaughtered in the hall.
Outside the castle, Frey and Bolton forces turned on the Stark army, drunk and unprepared. Robb’s direwolf, Grey Wind, trapped outside the keep, was killed with crossbows. Robb, gravely wounded, crawled to Talisa’s body. Walder halted the killing briefly to savor Robb’s suffering. Catelyn seized Walder’s wife and begged for her son’s life, swearing peace, but Walder refused, citing broken oaths.
Roose Bolton then killed Robb, whispering his betrayal. Catelyn fulfilled her threat and was immediately slain. The massacre continued until the Stark host was annihilated. Robb’s corpse was desecrated, his head replaced with Grey Wind’s and paraded through the Twins.
The Red Wedding ended the Stark war effort in the south. With Robb Stark dead and his army destroyed, House Lannister achieved decisive victory, securing the Iron Throne for Joffrey Baratheon. |
