Robert's Rebellion

Date: 282 AC - 283 AC

The civil war that ended nearly three centuries of Targaryen rule in Westeros. It began when Prince Rhaegar Targaryen abducted Lyanna Stark, and King Aerys II Targaryen responded by executing her father and brother. When Aerys demanded the heads of Robert Baratheon and Eddard Stark, rebellion followed.

Robert, Eddard Stark, and Jon Arryn united the Stormlands, North, and Vale, later joined by the Riverlands. The war’s turning point came at the Battle of the Trident, where Robert killed Rhaegar in single combat. With the royal army broken, Lannister forces entered King’s Landing under false loyalty, sacking the city. Aerys was slain by Jaime Lannister, earning him the name Kingslayer.

The rebellion ended with Robert crowned king. The last Targaryen heirs, Viserys Targaryen and the newborn Daenerys Targaryen, escaped into exile. Though brief, Robert’s Rebellion reshaped Westeros, planting the seeds of future wars and ending the age of dragons in name only.
