Siege of AR-558

Date: 2375

AR-558 was a small planetoid in the Chin’toka system that housed a Dominion subspace communications relay, captured by the United Federation of Planets following the First Battle of Chin’toka.

Federation ground troops initially drove the Jem'Hadar defenders from the facility, but the Dominion seeded the area with cloaked antipersonnel mines nicknamed “Houdinis.” A garrison of 147 Starfleet soldiers was left behind to hold the position while engineers dismantled the array and extracted intelligence. Due to the fragmented Federation hold on the system, resupply was sporadic and dangerous, with Jem’Hadar attack ships routinely ambushing supply runs.

Over the following months, Jem’Hadar forces, estimated at two full columns, repeatedly assaulted the outpost. The garrison, meant to be relieved after ninety days, remained under siege for nearly five months. Casualties mounted steadily. Captain Loomis and Commander Parker were killed, leaving command to Lieutenant Nadia Larkin. By the time the USS Defiant arrived, 104 defenders were dead and the survivors were suffering severe combat trauma.

Captain Benjamin Sisko and a small Defiant contingent remained to reinforce the position, raising the defense to just forty-eight personnel. Their expertise allowed the Houdini mines to be detected and redeployed. A reconnaissance mission led by Nog confirmed the overwhelming size of the Jem’Hadar force, though Nog was critically wounded during the operation.

The defenders prepared a final ambush, funneling the Jem’Hadar into a ravine seeded with mines. Though the Dominion forces suffered heavy losses, they breached the defenses and engaged in close combat. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Starfleet repelled the assault, killing dozens of Jem’Hadar at the cost of additional Federation lives.

Relief forces arrived shortly afterward, and the relay station remained in Federation hands until the Chin’toka system was later retaken by the Breen.
